The Demonseeds - 'Knee Deep in Hell's Grasp' plus Dead Horse EPs
Alright, sorry for this one being in .wma format...I hate that shit, but I'm at work and there's no iTunes, so I had to import the CD this way.
That being said, it's safe to say you're not going to find this album anywhere else. The CD is long out of print, and I scoured the internet for an upload of it to no avail. Unfortunate, because this shit rocks hard.
Longtime readers are probably familiar with Dead Horse and how much I love them, so it shouldn't be that surprising that I spent an afternoon finding a used copy of The Demonseeds' lone album 'Knee Deep in Hell's Grasp' on eBay.
The Demonseeds were Dead Horse frontman Michael Haaga's 2nd big project. I think he played bass on a Superjoint Ritual album and the following tour before, but this release finds him writing his own songs again.
I don't have a copy of his 2005 solo release 'The Plus and Minus Show' to put up, but suffice to say it's not very heavy. It's more like Pixies/grunge-type rock music, and is really really really good. The Demonseeds are like a step in between that and the goofy thrash-punk of Dead Horse. Basically, that means it's a perfect Haaga release. It's melodic and catchy with Haaga's trademark defeatist lyrics, but you can tell he took some cues from roommate/bandmate Phil Anselmo and his Down affiliates (note: just for the sake of clarity, I mean his Superjoint Ritual bandmates...Anselmo isn't on this release.)
If you like sludgy stoner stuff like Kyuss, Down, and Sleep, you'll definitely dig this, but to me it's a more enjoyable listen. Not to say I don't love Sleep, I'm just a sucker for a good pop song, which Haaga delivers on almost every track. As a side note, check out the awesomely reimagined version of the Dead Horse track 'Every God for Himself.'
I'm also posting the two final Dead Horse EPs which followed the 'Peaceful Death' album because they're not too easy to find either. The first one, 'Feed Me,' was the final Dead Horse release featuring Haaga. They did one last EP, 'Boil(ing),' with a different singer, then changed their name to Pasadena Napalm Division with basically the same lineup.

...Jake left early AGAIN, so that last bit of post-punk is all me. Dunno what we're doing next week.
...and last, but certainly not least, here is Forte from this past Friday night, featuring a brief interview with Josh Martin and Seth Putnam from Anal Cunt. I filled out most of the show with AxCx tracks and tracks by bands they like. If you don't know who these guys are, that's your loss. They've provided me with countless hours of humor and headbanging since early high school, and I own all their records, so obviously it was really cool to sit down and chat with them. Really nice guys, too (surprisingly).
Once again, the podcasts are not up, but I will make note on this page as soon as the interview is up. It should be on the 'WIDR INTERVIEWS' podcast page in its unedited form sometime soon. I had to do a ton of 'bleeps' to be able to play it on the air. But, here's the playlist for now anyhow:

Iron Maiden - The Ides of March
Iron Maiden - Wrathchild
Anal Cunt - Interview
Anal Cunt - Loudest Stereo

...and last, but certainly not least, here is Forte from this past Friday night, featuring a brief interview with Josh Martin and Seth Putnam from Anal Cunt.

Society's Fault Episode 30-something and Forte 22, plus Sykotik Sinfoney's album 'Eargasm'
Wow, so I kinda stopped posting here for about a month....I'm just posting this past week's radio programs because there were a lotta half-assed ones in-between. You can check out the Society's Fault and Forte podcast pages to hear them all, but I don't feel like typing out all those playlists. Actually, on closer inspection, it looks like the podcasts haven't been updated in a while. They'll be up eventually, though.
For now, here's the SF playlist. Add'l material provided by Coma Nova's new drummer, Jacob:

Jandek - Corner of the Street
The Raincoats - The Void
Sunny Day Real Estate - Friday
Allllllright, on to Forte. I had lots of new stuff built up for this week, including a brand new release by legendary doom-metallers Pentagram. This album is special because it's the reunion of the guitarist and the vocalist or something. I dunno. Pentagram changes members like most people change underwear. I just know this is the most rockingest shit I've heard these fellas do in a long time. Some of this album rivals mid-80's stuff even. It doesn't come close to the 60's and 70's demos, but what does? Anyhow, the album is called 'Last Rites' and I would strongly advise you to pick it up.
Playlist:
Moonreich - En Marche Sur Nos Terres
Death Axe - Night of the Slayers
Pentagram - Walk in the Blue Light
Pentagram - Call the Man
Pentagram - Death in the 1st Person
Pentagram - Treat Me Right
Pentagram - Be Forewarned (request)
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone (request)

Iron Maiden - Phantom of the Opera (request)
Sepultura - Ratamahatta
Botch - Swimming the Channel Vs. Driving the Chunnel
Deep Purple - Highway Star (Live)
...and lastly, I've finally got another download for y'all.
It's not very often that I find an album that's a) really cool and b) so goddamn obscure that I can't even find it. So, to start off, I was watching a b-grade science fiction film called 'Bad Channels' (it's a Full Moon pictures...more on this in the weeks to come, because I'm hopefully going to write an article comparing Full Moon with Troma Studios). The plot largely involves music, and there were a couple of what I would call music videos throughout the movie. One of these was by the rather unfortunately-named group Sykotik Sinfoney. Okay, so anybody in their right mind would probably see this band name and not even give them the time of day. But, in this case, I saw/heard them before reading the credits and finding out who they were.
I figured it would be something easy to go download, but surprisingly, there is very little info on these guys online. They were 'ahead of their time,' according to their own crappy homepage, and they have recently released a compilation of all their recordings called 'Eargasm,' which I am bringing to you now. Apparently they didn't have any proper releases in their heyday (the early '90's) aside from the 'Bad Channels' soundtrack.
So then. On to the music. The first thing I thought, upon seeing these guys decked out in goofy costumes and playing a combo of thrash, funk, circus and hair metal, was that they were a poor man's Mr. Bungle. The lyrics are often laughably bad, and the tempo/time changes are executed kinda clumsily, but goddamn, these guys actually write some pretty good tunes. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, these recordings are mostly from the late 80's/1990, and Mr. Bungle's first proper LP wasn't released until '91 or '92. Sooooo, either these fellas were big on local Eureka, CA bands, or they just happened to be influenced by the same groups that influenced Bungle (Oingo Boingo is a definite point of reference, as is early Chili Peppers, Frank Zappa, Slayer, GWAR, Devo, Funkadelic and Pantera). Whatever the case, this compilation is definitely worth a spin, and there was an alt-metal group called D.M.T. on the 'Bad Channels' soundtrack that was pretty decent, too. No luck finding their album, however.
Sykotik Sinfoney - Eargasm
Tracklist:
1. Mr. Cool
2. Posers
3. Gardeners from Hell
4. Ignorance
5. Maggots with Guns
6. Sex Sells
7. Life
8. Cake Fuck
9. Brain Dead
10. Stupid
11. Daddy Long Legs
12. Manic Depresso (I'm So Happy)
13. Little Ol' Lady Polka
14. Gumby
NOTE: The tracklisting on my upload is all screwed up cuz it's the only download I could find. It's pretty easy to figure out which song is which by what they say in the chorus, but the titles/order/etc. are completely wrong. Oh well, it's the music that counts.

Forte 20, featuring Epitaph's EP 'These Rotten Remains'
Couldn't find much info on these guys...apparently they're from Illinois. The EP is kind of like what a thrash metal album played by Jesus Lizard or Shellac might sound like. Odd, jerky rhythms, buzzsaw guitars, and a singer who really doesn't sound like a thrash vocalist at all. I dunno. I thought it was kinda neat, and it was only a 4-song EP, so I played the whole thing. Also of note was the fact that I got a shit-ton of requests in the last half of the show.podcast.

Forte 18, featuring Burzum's album 'Fallen'
If you've continued listening to Forte since I took over as host, odds are you like (or at least don't mind) Burzum. To me, Burzum isn't just one of the most innovative and original metal bands of the past couple decades, but they're one of the only groups in modern music that I find consistently enjoyable. This record doesn't come out in Norway til next week, and doesn't even reach America until April, so you might as well check out my podcast and hear the shit while you can. That being said, here's my take on 'Fallen':
While 2010's 'Belus' was pretty subdued (for Burzum) and featured more emphasis on melody and intricate guitar parts than any other release, 'Fallen' sounds like Varg is getting angry again. The recording reminds me of older Burzum releases (pre-'Filosofem') where the idea was to do shit as lo-fi as possible. Maybe that's just the bad rip I have, but this sounds like a much 'dirtier' record to me. That being said, Varg has also continued to use his 'real' singing voice--something which first appeared on 'Belus.' Before that, it was all black metal screams and the occasional quiet talking part. There are full-on HARMONIES on this record. What the hell? There are also fewer 'ambient' pieces than on the last couple Burzum releases, which is fine by me. I like the stuff, but I pretty much just use it to fall asleep. I don't care about any of the murder or jail shit anymore, this guy is a great musician and he continues to prove it with each release.

Forte 17, featuring Dead Horse's album 'Peaceful Death and Pretty Flowers'
You remember these guys, right? I hope so. I've played them countless times on Obscuro, and periodically during my tenure as Forte's host as well. Now you get to hear the whole goddamn album.Dead Horse was formed in the late 80's by Michael Haaga and his friends in Houston, TX. Maybe it's just the Texas connection, but to me these guys sound like if the Butthole Surfers started a thrash metal band. Weird interludes, bizarre humor, musical left-turns, and lots more stuff that doesn't really fit into the 'thrash' genre. They only cut two full lengths (two EP's also) and it was really hard to pick which one to play. The first one, 'Horsecore' is a little more thrash (and a little funnier) but it also has a lot more cursing, so it was just easier to play 'Peaceful Death.' Aside from the Horse, I played lots of 'classic' metal cuts to suit the early-90's mood of the album.
If you remember, I posted this album as a download a while back. There's also some info in that post about what lead man Michael Haaga is up to these days.
Anyhow, here's the podcast,

Forte 16...including an on-air reading of a letter demanding Forte be pulled from WIDR
So, I got a letter in my mailbox at the WIDR offices...apparently it dates back to 1999 (probably during former host Aaron's tenure) and concerns a very religious, very angry man who wanted Forte pulled from the airwaves for being 'university-funded Satanism.' It's pretty funny. I'll probably post a written version of it up here in a day or so. For now, check it out in this week's podcast.Totally Satanic Playlist:

Indeed. I had not heard this Esoteric group from the UK before doing the program this week, and that stuff is badass. It's really creepy and slow, both things I like. Expect to hear more of them on the program. Also, Obscuro mega-blowout-3-hour-special is STILL coming soon. Give it a couple more weeks, probably.

Bizarro Jerry's Alternate Universe Metal Program (aka Forte 14)
This one is for the 3, maybe 4 folks who've told me they miss the Obscuro! radio show. I played pretty much all the insane, deranged, twisted heavy metal I've found doing the show (and some cuts from the Obscuro! days, too) and put them into one 3-hour block of totally fucked radio. Okay, so I WAS about half an hour late because Coma Nova was playing a house party, but still...2 and a half hours of this stuff is probably more than enough. You've got your retarded-bad basement demos, misguided attempts at heavy metal by record executives, totally satanic black metal made by loner dudes in the woods, and every other kind of heavy shit you never knew existed. I am thinking about bringing back Obscuro! one of these weeks for a three-hour block in Forte's place once I get enough new weird stuff collected. We'll see.Get that podcast, fella.
