Lowdown Da Sinista - 'Coming for Your Soul'

More of that evil Memphis sound for ya. This is only up a couple other places, so I'm gonna post it. Lowdown is a little different from the other Memphis rappers in that he has a good time. He's also a loud-ass rapper, which is different than the creepy whispery style of other Memphis dudes. Like I said, he has a good time, so expect lots of party jams. It's pretty much split between super-depressing gangsta tracks and goofy party anthems. One song in particular, 'Blah,' made me laugh a whole bunch. There's basically no other word but 'blah,' but it's still got two verses. Pretty much sounds how I'd imagine my parents hear rap music. A lot of the beats are gloriously weird, too, plus look at that goddamn cover. It's good stuff, and will probably end up in my top 10 favorite Memphis rap releases. Yeah, I know that sounds elitist but there's a LOT of this shit and it's all so good.

Spark Master Tape - 'Syrup Splash'

Okay, had to post this too because not NEARLY enough people are rockin' this dude's shit. For the record, no one knows who he is, where's he from, or anything like that. I wouldn't be surprised if it's some antisocial white dude in his mom's basement, but then he throws the n-word around and talks about living in the projects, so who knows. Regardless, it's a continuation of this psychedelic old-school style that Lil Ugly Mane and SpaceGhostPurrp kinda started. There are definite elements of 90's Memphis horrorcore here, but it's also super original and wayyyyyy out-there.

Vocals constantly fluctuate in pitch, and he's got some real what-the-fuck lines. I mean, dude's a great rapper, and whoever makes the beats is on point, too. Fuck, it might be him doing both. Paper Platoon is the main producer, and is apparently considered a member of the 'group.' It would make more sense if he WAS the rapper, because these beats are really weird and are perfectly suited for the rapper's style.

My friend said it sounded like Lil Ugly Mane on a bunch of meth or something, and that's pretty accurate. The tracks are very short and the whole thing is real ADHD. Kinda like if Madlib tried to do a dirty south Quasimoto record. Despite all the experimentation, a lot of these tracks somehow manage to be super-catchy. 'Never Gave a Fukk' will be stuck in yer head for days.

The best part is, since barely anyone knows this guy, his music is still free. Oh, and for the record, I'm pretty sure those aren't 'real' guest appearances...just samples from a capella tracks or something.

More downloadzzz for yall. This is some evil-ass lo-fi rap from the ghettos of Detroit. If anyone has info on this, lemme know, because I can't find much. Got it off some dude on Soulseek and it's virtually unavailable on the web. It's gotta be connected to Esham somehow, but maybe just indirectly. I mean, it's pretty unlikely that two dudes would randomly be rapping in the same style about satan at the same time in Detroit without knowing each other at least. Anyhow, this stuff does kinda have an Esham sound to it, but way slower. More like Memphis horrorcore than Detroit horrorcore honestly. There are also very few guest spots. I seem to remember this linked back to Mike Clark, the producer for ICP, but that might've been something else I downloaded.

Whatever the case, it's yours to enjoy now.

Here's another one that's pretty scarce around the internet. Also, one of my favorite things to come out of the demented Memphis rap scene. The beats on this are sooooo lo-fi and toy-sounding, it's great. 'Fire it Up' is a definite classic, but everything on here is just as good. Apparently this is produced by Blackout, who did some of the straight-up creepiest beats ever put on cassette. This is a totally different production style than his normal fare, but I like it. Judging by the content I post about, you can probably guess that the things people send my way are often bizarre. Fine by me. Today's is no exception.

Here's the bio I was sent:

Mind you, I have no idea how much of that is true. I do love the idea of 'rap game Bobby Hill.' I'm going to assume 16 is probably the correct age of this dude. Most of the mixtape/album covers feature false quotes attributed to people like Earl Sweatshirt, Lil B, Yelawolf, etc. Although, once again, who knows, maybe there's a legit quote in there somewhere.

Anyhow, this is some angry, shit-talkin' rap music. Faggot hates pretty much everybody putting out music currently, and he's perfectly happy to throw all amounts of ridiculous lines at them. You also get him pretending to be Mickey Mouse and rapping about smoking weed, doing fake 'guest spots' as rappers like Danny Brown, bragging about killing Kurt Cobain, and plenty of stoned prank calls. Yeah, it fits right in here pretty much.

I dunno if he makes the beats (the 'foreign people' thing would lead me to believe not) but if he did, props because most of 'em are pretty pleasing to the ear. 

If the Odd Future stuff makes ya cringe, you probably wanna steer clear of this...it's that on steroids and crack. Why do I bother searching for music when people are waiting to send me wild shit like this?

Womack The Omen - 'Book of the Dead'

Some of ya have probably been looking for this for a while. I know I was. Heard a couple tracks a while back and was pretty impressed by how straight up evil the vibe of this album is. Sure, the lo-fi quality kinda amps up the menace, but the dude is just raspy as fuck and sounds genuinely scary. He also apparently doesn't do drugs...? Kind of monumental for lowdown Memphis shit like this. He at least doesn't smoke weed, because he mentions it in like every track.

This was up on the wonderful Twankle and Glisten blog a while back, but has long since disappeared, and it doesn't appear to be on any blogs right now. Which means Ima put it up. Here ya go.

Shawty Pimp - 'Still Comin' Real'

Been on another Memphis rap kick recently...this one definitely took some digging. I heard a few tracks off some mix, and really wanted to hear the rest, but that proved a lot more difficult than I figured it would be. Finally got a hold of it off Soulseek (which I highly recommend for all your digital digging needs) and here it is for you.

If you're into the Memphis rap sound (eerie samples, sloooooowwww tempos, and murderous lyrics) you'll instantly notice how different this lil tape is. Shawty Pimp is definitely a producer's producer, whatever that means. He's got a much better ear for hooks than most Memphis producers, and this stuff is REALLY laid back. Like, so laid back it's kinda comical how many murder raps there are over these smooth-jazz beats. They still have the 'feel' of a Memphis tape, but the whole thing has a much more uplifting vibe I guess. I dunno, I like it a lot.

I'd be willing to bet that Lil Ugly Mane took some inspiration from this rarity. No tracklist on the rip I grabbed, but I found a makeshift one off another site.

Death - 'Possessed by tha Ouija Board'

Been diggin' a lot of real underground rap shit lately, so here's some more of that. This one is up on a few other music blogs, but it's too odd not to include here. Death is a member of the Ruthless Juveniles, whose work is pretty solid too. Death produces the best beats, though, and grabs samples from everywhere...classical music, horror movies, television, metal music...and his stuff is really fucked up and homemade-sounding, which makes it all the creepier. To me, it sounds like a rawer Brotha Lynch Hung with way better beats...none of that lame g-funk shit.

DJ Spanish Fly - 'Variety Mix 22'

Here's an interesting article on DJ Spanish Fly...

...apparently a real rap pioneer, I only heard this guy through the Twankle and Glisten 'For the Weed Smokers' mix tape...his track 'Smokin' Onion' was all sortsa lo-fi and weird, so I guessed (correctly) the rest of his stuff would be similar.

A lot of this old 'dirty south' rap appears and disappears on the internet very fast for whatever reason, and it was nearly impossible to find any of Spanish Fly's legendary mix tapes from the late 80's/early 90's.

'Variety Mix 22' seems to be a favorite. I think the coolest part of his story is that he would literally re-record his own songs every time he made a mixtape because he didn't have the technology to do otherwise. Also, dude didn't even have a 4-track--just two cassette decks. Badass.

Divine Styler - 'Word Power 2: Directrix'

I'm putting this up here because it was a real shitty time finding it. Plus, if you recall, I put one of the Styler's other albums up here a while back. That album, 1991's 'Spiral Walls Containing Autumns of Light' was a mind-fuck, not-really-rap-at-all album from a trippy dude who hung with the 5% hip hop crowd. The record completely alienated him from most of his peers, and Divine Styler didn't put out another release for several years.

Then, after appearing on House of Pain's swansong 'Truth Crushed to the Earth Shall Rise Again,' he dropped this album in '98. Far removed from the chaos of his previous disc, this one is DEFINITELY a rap album, and a really good one, too. I was pretty surprised by how good it is, because doing a 'sequel' to your first (and best-selling) album is kinda a cheap means of getting people to buy it. The Styler mixes up his trademark rhyme flow by doing some slower tracks, and some extremely fast ones...there's also some fucked up distortion on a number of the vocal tracks, probably because it sounds cool.

The thing that I noticed first was how 'modern' this record sounds. It's not too different from a lot of the experimental stuff coming out these days like Antipop Consortium and Shabazz Palaces. Proof once again that Styler is one ahead-of-his-time dude. The best point of reference would probably be Kool Keith's 'Black Elvis/Lost in Space' album, but Styler's got a thing all his own....the lyrics are mainly spiritual (which goes back to the 5% thing...if you don't know what I'm talking about, look it up you lazy fool) but he actually rivals Keith with the space-doo-doo rhymes. Anyhow, pick it up here before Rapidshare deletes the file, because I don't have a premium account and I refuse to get one, or do re-ups (unless requested.)

Rap is gettin' fucked up

So yeah, there's some pretty interesting hip hop stuff coming out these days. Here's some of the stuff I've heard recently thanks to the internet and WIDR. It kinda feels like it's '91 with the alt-rock boom, except even weirder. I've been tellin' folks who aren't into rap for years that it'll have the same arc rock music has had...basically if you think that rock and roll started in the 50's, it was reaching its popular creative peak about 20 years later with 'album rock' and concept albums and the like, then all the heady creative stuff went underground for a while until the late 80's/early 90's when 'regular' music listeners were ready for a different sound.

Now look at rap/hip hop. It became a real genre about 30 years after rock and roll, with Sugarhill records in the late 70's/early 80's. So, the creative peak of popular shit should be about 20 years later. Right, you've got your OutKast once they dropped 'Aquemini,' Fugees, Wu Tang, etc. And we can't forget rap's '60's' period which laid the blueprint for all this shit...In rap's case, it'd be the early 90's, with Cypress, Beastie Boys in their slacker phase, KRS-One, Nas, what have you.

So 'regular' radio-hip-hop-listeners are probably ready for something different, if we consider the 00's to be rap music's lame 80's bullshit period. I mean, the stuff I heard coming out of cars and parties in those years was fucking really bad. Auto-tune is the gated reverb of modern day.

But it had to end sometime, just like nobody wanted to hear A Flock of Seagulls or Def Leppard in the 90's. That's what all this shit is...the backlash of years of shitty music being crammed down peoples' throats. And the best part is, most of these new fuckers are giving their stuff away for free.

ODD FUTURE

I'm not even gonna front. I love these guys. They can really do no wrong at this point. Tyler's 'Goblin' album was the shit, the TV show is hilarious, and the new OF Tape is their best work yet. Who cares if they're not self-aware, which is what all the indie folks want? So they don't like Antipop Consortium or Kool Keith. I think it's better they remain un-influenced by anyone. It's like the whole Nirvana 'fuck you, we just wanna write songs like the Beatles' thing. They just wanna rock out to some mid-period Eminem and do their own thing. Having listened to pretty much everything this crew has put out, here's my take on it:

Tyler, The Creator

The most visible member of the crew, but not necessarily my favorite. Tyler says it best in the opening track of 'Goblin'--he's not really a great rapper, but on the whole, he's pretty fucking cool. 'Goblin' was a terrific album, and 'Bastard' was really good, too. The most memorable cuts come from his releases, like 'AssMilk,' 'Yonkers,' 'Radicals' and 'Burger.' Honestly, what got me was how many times this kid says 'faggot' on record. Reminded me of the old days when Eminem actually scared people. What's scarier than some deep-voiced, possibly psychotic black kid calling you a fag and threatening to rape you?

Hodgy Beats/LeftBrain/MellowHype

Hodgy didn't really catch my ear til the new OF Tape, on which he totally steals the show. The 2nd MellowHype album is really cool if only because of LeftBrain's awesome production, which is totally fucking nuts. Some of his beats don't even line up properly and have this lopsided fucked feeling to them. Hodgy's solo output didn't do it for me, but he's definitely the most improved member of the crew.

Domo Genesis

I really liked 'Rolling Papers.' Real laid back shit, some of the best OF productions. Plus, 'Grocery Store' is probably my favorite OF track. Domo gets shit for not being as interesting as the other fellas, but I think his more toned-down approach is easy on the ears.

Earl Sweatshirt

The youngest and most talented OF member. His disc 'Earl' is hands-down my favorite to come out of this group. Mind-blowingly offensive, but the 'Oldie' track on OF Tape Vol. 2 proves that he can bring the skills even without being gratuitously shocking. I'm excited for his new stuff to come out.

Syd tha Kyd/Matt Martians

I'm not really into The Internet, which is this girl/guy's project, but it's definitely different. Really laid back electro-pop. A lot better than other shit like this that's coming out.

Frank Ocean

I haven't checked out too much of his solo stuff because I'm not into R and B, but his track 'Pyramids' is pretty goddamn creative for 'mainstream' sounding stuff. Plus, he always brings good choruses to OF tracks.

Then you've got all the members who only really appear on compilation mixtapes...Taco and Jasper are both funny, while not incredibly great rappers. I haven't heard any of Mike G's solo stuff, but his verses on OF tapes are some of my favorites.

THE RAIDER KLAN

These are a bunch of southern kids putting out mixtapes that are directly influenced by the syrup-soaked sound of early 90's southern rap like Three 6 Mafia. I got into that shit a few years back thanks to Twankle and Glisten, and they're pulling it off how it should be done. First of all, there aren't many 'legit' hip hoppers who have a real sense of history, so this is pretty cool. Plus, whereas the originals did lo-fi because they had to, these kids do lo-fi to get a specific sound. To me, that's the exact same thing as Guided By Voices trying to make albums like Beatles bootlegs.

SpaceGhostPurrp

His new album just came out on 4AD, which is kinda weird. I really like his beats...they're creepy and slurry and atmospheric. DJ Paul would be/probably is proud. His rhymes are so-so, REALLY sex-obsessed, which doesn't do it for me, but when he's on point he's great. 'Git Ya Head Bust' is one of the coolest jams to come out. Like Tyler, it's more about the whole thing than just his raps or his beats.

Metro Zu

These guys didn't really do it for me. Too sex-heavy, and the beats are too mainstream.

Lil Ugly Mane

What the hell is this dude? I think (?) he's a white guy, and he comes off like some ghetto Leatherface, using the absolute creepiest beats this crew has to offer. He's a pretty good rapper, having mastered the southern 'triplet'-style verse, and he's clever as hell. 'Mista Thug Isolation' is a solid release.

Denzel Curry

I'm feelin' this guy's stuff. His production is a little more dreamy than SpaceGhost's, and his rhymes aren't quite as sex-obsessed. The mixtapes he's put out are definitely the most 'dirty south' sounding stuff.

Dunno much about the other stuff they're putting out, but it's probably quality. Except A$AP Rocky...didn't get into it...I got more respect for the guys who produce AND rap...Clams Casino's beats are pretty legit, though.

SHABAZZ PALACES

This stuff is pretty weird. Kinda like a slowed-down Antipop Consortium, only this is a comparison they probably wouldn't get pissed at. More 'underground' minded than the previously mentioned stuff. They're signed to SubPop, so that's cool, right? Plus, they got a dude from Digable Planets to work with them.

DANNY BROWN

Straight outta Detroit, land of horrorcore, comes this fucked up fella. A fellow WIDRite put together a mix of his songs, telling me that his albums don't hold up so well, but individual tracks are cool. I don't know, as I've still been digesting his CD, and haven't checked out full-lengths yet. The beats aren't really anything all that new, but his rhymes are refreshingly weird.

CURREN$Y

This guy was either a No Limit Soldier or a Cash Money Millionaire in the late 90's. Don't care enough to look up which it was. What's important is that now he's doing some really cool shit. This is a little too laid back for some people, but for a dopesmoker like me, it's perfect. Just commercial enough to turn some heads, but the beats he's using are really interesting, and he's developed a rhyme cadence that's half dirty-south, half New York in the early 90's. A really cool mix of flavors. 'Pilot Talk' I and II and 'Weekend at Burnie's' are both really solid...didn't like his recent release 'Stoned Immaculate' as much.

DAS RACIST

These guys are hilarious. I remember hearing the Pizza Hut/Taco Bell song from a friend a few years back, and thought it was stupid, but they've since proved themselves to be terrific and original MCs. I tried to hate 'Relax' because it's so big-budget sounding, but it's just too awesome.

LIL B

This guy seems like he took way too much ecstacy. Kinda like he wants to love/sleep with everyone. Not as into it as some of this other stuff, but the 6Kiss mixtape was really cool. His newest 'real' release, 'I'm Gay,' has its moments, but he suffers from the 'not a producer/not the best rapper' thing. I do think his best work is worth checking out, though. The new-age stuff where he's freestyling over ambient background music is really really weird.

DEATH GRIPS

This is the drummer from Hella, who is absolutely nuts, with a loud, foul-mouthed rapper who looks like Kimbo Slice. The beats sample everything from Jane's Addiction to Black Flag, to Link Wray's 'Rumble.' It's like punk-rap...kinda...I dunno...whatever it is, it's cool, although 'Ex-Military' is wayyyyy better than their new release 'The Money Store.' New one sounds like they toned it down a bit and didn't use any samples either. Oh well, one amazing album is more than most artists drop these days.

So, all that, coupled with mainstream cats like Lil Wayne and Wiz Khalifa (who I don't really like, but appreciate what they bring to music) taking their cues from the underground, makes this a pretty exciting time for pop music.

I'm not posting any links because if you just do a little browsing, you should be able to find most of this stuff for free from the artists themselves.

Rap attack?

Well, because the album I'm playing tonight is a hip hop album, I decided to just fill up two hours of airtime with oddball, obscure, and underground rap music. I did this before (when I covered one of the hip hop guys' shows) but that left me free to play some more well-known stuff, too. This time around, I dug out the absolute weirdest, most out-of-the-ordinary stuff I could find. 'Like what,' you ask?

-A middle-aged accountant who raps about killing Santa Claus and all the 'hos' he has.
-Drug-damaged southern rap
-Novelty raps from the 1980's about Freddy Krueger
...and obviously a ton more, too. Also, there won't be too many similarities between this and the rap mixtape I prepared a while back, because that would be boring, right?

HUGE collective from California. The rappers range from spotty to brilliant, and that's the way I like it. You might be familiar with 2Mex or Awol One from this group.

3. MC J' Ro J' - "Let's Jump" - 12" single, 1988
Your guess is as good as mine, although this dude pops up on a couple other tracks here. This song is really fucking weird.

4. Rappin' With Gas - "Rappin' With Gas" - Rappin' With Gas, 1988
Once again, I'm not really sure, although this track is just lame. These kids can't flow.

5. Death - "Life as a Psycho" - Possessed by tha Ouija Board, 1995
This is some down-low, mean-ass rap music.

6. Fog - "Pneumonia" - S/T, 2002
Okay, so it's not really rap...but it is a guy with nothing but his turntable and guitar. I would call most of their stuff instrumental hip-hop, but this one's got some singing.

7. Dr. John D. Clarke - "The Rules" - ???, ???
A rapping doctor who really cares about diabetics. Apparently he's got a new track out about H1N1 Flu. Haha.

8. Wink D. ft. Candy Fresh - "Revenge" - 12" single, 1989
This chick's got a bad-ass attitude. Just some good party-rap.

9. Esham - "13 Ways" - Judgement Day Vol. 2, 1992
Detroit's own evilest rapper. Nobody comes close. He's been self-producing and writing and releasing since he was like 13 years old. He even kicked ass back then, too.

10. Edan - "Emcees Smoke Crack" - Primitive Plus, 2002
Another self-producer/releaser/recordist/etc, except this time it's a white Jewish guy. Edan can be extremely funny and he's known for using some wacked-out samples, but he's got some serious flows too.

11. DJ Jimi - "Jivin'" - I'm Back! I'm Back!, 1994
The album kind of sucks, but this tune is at least interesting. I'm not sure if this guy is trying to sound like a beat poet or something, but whatever.

12. 40 B-Low - "Country Bass" - In Da House, 1994
More party rap.

13. Omid - "Farmer's Market of the Beast" - Beneath the Surface, 1998
Omid is just the producer; MC's on this track include some from the Shapeshifters. One of the strangest hip-hop tracks I've ever heard...each rapper tries to sound like a different animal.

14. Dan Bull - "After Life" - Safe, 2009
Self-described autistic rapper from the UK. I dunno about him being autistic, but he might be crazy cuz he drops some pretty disturbed ideas on this record.

15. Cameron Paul - "Brown Beats" - Beats and Pieces, 1987
Apparently some producer from the south. I dunno, it's just called "Brown Beats" and I thought that was kind of funny.

16. Basehead - "Split Personality" - Not in Kansas Anymore, 1993
Homemade rap music from Michael Ivey, who was basically a stoned suburban black college kid. Most people like their first album, "Play with Toys" better, but I think this one is more diverse. Incredibly weeded-out and lo-fidelity.

17. West Bank Coalition - "Pass Da Nine" - 12" single, 1993
More southern rap, and also the return of MC J' Ro J'. I don't know shit about this song, so if you do, tell me.

18. Rebirth Brass Band - "You Don't Want to go to War" - Hot Venom, 2001
Before you decide this isn't a rap song, listen to it all the way through. These guys are a NOLA brass band, but they also take turns MCing on most tracks. A nice long jam to end out the mixtape.
