Playlist for 5-28-10, featuring Harry Perry's 1995 album "Greatest Hits of the Millennium"

Here it is...the last in this 10-album series of full-lengths being played on the program. I (sort of) saved the best for last, because Harry Perry's album is one I've been wanting to do for a while now.

For starters, here's some info about this dude:

"Harry Perry is a Venice Beach boardwalk musician famous for playing an electric guitar on rollerblades while wearing a turban. Harry Perry is also known by his Sikh name Har Nar Singh Khalsa, and by his musical moniker, the Kama Kosmic Krusader." - Wikipedia

"Harry Perry is perhaps the most enduring and high-profile street performer in the world. On a pair of in-line skates (quads in his earlier days), Harry has worked the Venice Beach boardwalk since 1974. He has earned a cherished reputation among the good folk of Southern California, and cuts an unforgettable image in his trademark attire of a white robe, white turban and big smile, playing his red and white electric guitar. He has his own Wikipedia entry, there is a statue of his likeness installed at Disneyland in Anaheim and he appears in countless wall murals around the city. Harry has a several page bio on IMDB (having made myriad cameo and acting appearances in such noted films as, 'White Men Can't Jump' and 'Point of No Return'. He has composed tracks for film and T.V. and has released several albums as the Harry Perry Band in which he continues to perform at venues around Los Angeles." - broowaha.com

Playlist for 5-21-10, featuring Randy Holden's 1970 album "Population II"

Here's a loud one for ya--

I've had this album in my collection for quite a while now, but I figured it'd be something either WIDR's 60's program or 70's program would've gotten into, and I didn't want to do any overlapping. But, it seems like I'm in the clear and this record has apparently never been played on WIDR except by me.

Randy was once a replacement guitarist for the proto-metal band Blue Cheer. At least, he played on one side of their record 'New! Improved!' and then decided they were 'sissy napping music' and started his own, heavier project. Now, if you've heard Blue Cheer, you'll no doubt realize that it would've been hard to craft something heavier than that in the late 60's...but, Holden was nuts.

For his first (and only?) solo album, Randy enlisted a drummer who could play keyboards with his feet so that they could just be a duo. They rented out an opera house or something just to hold all of Randy's massive amp stacks. Holden has said that the tempos of his songs are so slow because of the really intensive song arrangements on the drummer's part.

Here's what some folks have said about his record:

"...What we hear is a little under a half an hour’s worth of Holden’s super-slowed and heavy guitar riffing/wailing/soaring. The pure sludge of it will cause cracks in your ceiling, all the windows of your room, the sky itself and possibly even your brain. It’s almost as though Holden is trying to make his drummer sense his purpose is futile and bolt the studio door to leave him alone to continue his deafening work as it dwarfs everything in its path as guitar solo upon guitar solo reduce Lockheed’s drumming to function more as punched pillows in the background. And Holden’s volcanic eruptions continue as slow as molasses and fiery as lava, spewing forth a barrage to drown out even the caterwauling-ness of his own vocals...not to mention his rhythm and bass guitar tracks." - The Seth Man from Julian Cope's Head Heritage site

"While never attaining his rightful place in the pantheon of heavy rock guitar gods, Randy Holden will always be held in high regard for creating Population II - one of greatest high-volume displays of all time and an all-out monster of an album.

Best known for his brief tenure in Blue Cheer that lasted long enough for him to appear on the second side of their New! Improved! LP, Holden signed an endorsement deal with Sunn amplifiers upon his departure and ordered twenty 200 watt speaker cabinets for use on his debut solo release. And he used them all. At once.

Paired with Chris Lockheed, who handled drums and keyboards simultaneously, Holden took aim at laying down not only the loudest album in recorded history, but the first to successfully bridge the divide between psychedelic rock and heavy metal. The result, a heavily reverbed affair with piles of reverse effects, beautifully controlled feedback and sparse arrangements that allowed plenty of space for the volume to stretch out, was far beyond what Black Sabbath, the Stooges or Led Zeppelin were up to around the same time.

Even more amazing is how for a guitar-centric album, Population II is completely devoid of clichés, superfluous guitar heroics or trite lyrics, yet oddly enough, this slice of heaven received only a limited release on the small Hobbit label and was quickly withdrawn by Holden's management under a veil of secrecy. Thankfully, it has been heavily bootlegged in great fidelity for nearly 40 years. It may not be your thing, but if you allow this one to sink in, you'll get completely lost in it." - user KiDG, rateyourmusic.com

Mo' tunes, HATE Noise Disc 5

In continuing with the unveiling of all the countless hours of home recordings I have, here is my most recent collection of 'solo' tunes. Usually, when between projects, I'll just throw down whatever ideas I have, but this time I was specifically going for a 'finished' product.

The music was recorded on a Fostex 8-track reel-to-reel machine with one SM-57, one SM-58 and one mic that was apparently too shitty to even have a brand name on it. Vocal overdubs and mixing done in Pro-Tools.

Description: The 5th disc under the guise of 'The HATE Noise.' I was going to do a little more with these recordings, but formed a group instead (taking our name from the song 'Coma Nova').

Personnel: Me, mostly, on all the instruments, although Matt Motzell plays saxophone on track 5 and there are various people's voices in the sound clips throughout.

Tracklist:

1. Sea of Pain
2. Smokin' Boulders
3. Apricot Guys
4. Political Song for George Forman to Sing
5. Coma Nova
6. Desert Song
7. Bummed Out on Mersh
8. User is Okay
9. Hair Farmer
10. Accident
11. Brown Eyed Girl

DOWNLOAD

There are 6 discs in the HATE Noise series, total...this being the 5th, but also the most recent recordings (the 6th is various odds and ends)...I'll be posting them all (probably, maybe) out of order, because they vary in quality.

As promised...here's the Orange Taylor

These are the demos for the second Orange Taylor LP. I played guitar, vocalized, and did a lot of the beat-production work in this group. The first 'real' incarnation of this group featured the four fellas in the photo above, but by this time we'd worked in a keyboardist/electronic specialist, who then became our bassist, and in consequence these recordings were reworked several times until nobody wanted to even hear the songs again. Now, however, they sound pretty goddamned cool.

Description: Orange Taylor's Untitled Second LP...more or less a weed-crazy, psychedelicized rap-rock odyssey.

Members: alternately, Papa Squat (aka Daddy Nothing, Father Zilch), The Professor, MC Sharks in the Swimming Pool, MC Hangover, Fives, Misselaineous, North Star, and our next door neighbor Sean

Tracklist:

1. Another Level
2. Papa's Got a Brand New Bag (And There's a Body in it)
3. Death Brings Certain Tax Deductions
4. Scamming the Entire Village
5. Aliens
6. Cigarettes and Change

Playlist for 5-14-10, featuring Robert Gilligan's 1987 album "Dark Rooms"

Last week's album was a very split-second decision, as I heard the record and literally decided to play it later that same day. I know next to nothing about this guy or his life, which is also strange for the program because I try to do research on each album I bring out.

Basically, what I know is that Robert Gilligan was half English, half Austrian, and that he played, recorded and wrote this album completely by himself shortly before killing himself. The music included on his album is kind of folk-rock, maybe like a really sloppy Neil Young or the Kenneth Higney tracks I played a while back. All the words, however, are about how being born is a curse, how everything sucks, and why we should all die (basically). This creates a very odd mood because the music isn't all that dark and depressing; just the words.

Here's pretty much the only review I can find of this record:

"Amazing Tortured Downer Folk Psych with a psych edge and Nick Drake influences. Crying for help atmosphere, paranoid lyrics, sparse guitar and drums backing.. Sadly Robert committed suicide shortly after this was released. One of the most intense Downer Folk Lp's out there" - Jellyfishrecords.com

As I said before, the rest of the program's music was pretty much just me cleaning house and getting rid of some of these tracks I've had on disc for way too long.

Woops!....Playlist for 5-7-10, featuring Bobby Brown's 1972 album "Enlightening Beam of Axonda"

Well, I completely forgot to make any written document of last week's show, which wasn't all that bad. The album in question is some very spacey, very religious homemade psychedelic music, so I tailored the show to kind of fit around it. Bobby would've wanted it that way. Actually, he's probably still alive. Here's a review of his 1972 album from RateYourMusic.com:

"Bobby Brown stands as a shining example of a California musical eccentric. By the way, that's meant as a heartfelt compliment, rather than a slam.

Born and raised in Sacramento, California, by the early 1970s Brown was making a living as a one man band, playing up and down the California coast. As shown on the front cover, his act included an impressive home-made rig that contained some 50 instruments that were placed on racks that could be easily loaded and unloaded from a van. Brown would apparently cruise up and down the coast, stopping to play concerts for folks, selling copies of his albums from the back of his van.

So what's Brown's 1972 self-produced debut sound like? Well, as you probably guessed from the title, "The Enlightening Beam of Axonda" is pretty spacey, but in a surprisingly laidback and agreeable fashion. Brown had a nice voice (technically I think he'd be called a basso-profundo), that lent itself well to atmospheric tracks such as 'I Must Be Born', 'My Hawaiian Home' and 'Mama Knows Boys a Rambler'. (Brown's liner notes claimed he had a six octave range.) Lyrically Brown's hippy-dippy lyrics were pretty hysterical (here's brief quote from the liner notes: "an original contribution to the field of religion and science based on physics - to my knowledge not yet discovered by other humanoids-more revolutionary that Einsteins (sic) revelations or Newtonian physics - the application of this physics will perhaps (in fact) lead to the most significant changes in the history of humanity (plus total religious unity)." Complete with between-the-songs narratives, the album almost qualifies as a concept piece with a plotline apparently having to do with Brown's search for fulfillment, though I'm not quite sure how the space aliens and space travel fit into the storyline (?), That said, be warned that nothing here exactly rocks. Most of the ten tracks are quite melodic, tough in a new age kind of way. In fact, stuff such as 'Tiny Wind of Shanol' and 'Axonda' would be right at home playing as background music in something like the Nature Store. There are a couple of exceptions. 'Mamba Che Chay' was pretty experimental and did little for my ears, while 'Preparation Dimension of Heaven' sounded like a bad lounge act effort. Still, the set's goofy enough to be intriguing. " - RateYourMusic user RDTEN1

There you have it. Also, that picture at the top is the album cover and indeed features Brown's insane, home-constructed drumkit. For all the wildness of Bobby's music, it made for a pretty mellow Obscuro! which you can download a podcast of...

I promise that now, since I'm jobless and have little else to do than put together a swingin' radio show, this page will have more frequent updates and downloads.

That in mind, here's the tracklist for Bobby's Brown, and the download link:

2. My Hawaiian Home
3. Oneness with the Forest
4. Tiny Wind of Shanol

Not sure if that tracklist is entirely accurate, because I've seen some different ones, but that's the tracklist I have. The download is in Megaupload instead of Mediafire because their site is fucking up right now.

It's already been a week since this show, so that means I'll be on your radio at midnight tonight. I'm not entirely sure what tonight's show will be, but I'm pretty sure it'll have a lot of 'cleaning house' since there hasn't really been any good weird stuff popping up recently (at least, not good enough for MY show). Hopefully I'll be able to dig up some new records, but the pickin's are pretty slim right now. Whatever the case, it won't just be me repeating myself.
