Playlist for 4-30-10, featuring Dwarr's 1986 album "Animals"

Duane Warr (aka Dwarr) is a kindly South Carolinian realtor who, in the mid-80's, made a couple drug-fueled, deranged albums in his trailer park home with a rented tape machine. He played all the instruments, and was inspired by heavy, doom-y bands like Black Sabbath (although you'd be hard pressed to compare his records to anything else). Initially, I was going to wait on playing his second album, "Animals" on the program, because I'd gotten in contact with Mr. Warr and bought some other discs off him. Also, he agreed to do an on-air interview at some point. However, it had been months since we talked, so I decided to go for it. Literally the day of the show, he e-mailed to say he'd sent out the discs, but I decided to play the record anyways. There's no such thing as 'too much Dwarr.'

Here are a couple review excerpts on the album in question:

"Duane Warr recorded two albums in the early 80's in South Carolina before going totally over the edge in an Alcohol and drug induced frenzy whilst recording his third (unreleased) album. He "found God" and, according to one source, burned all the remaining Dwarr albums, master tapes, artwork, etc. This is the second (and better) of his two albums and finding a proper description is tough. This is over-the-top psychedelic doom-metal-insanity -- dark, brooding, and totally whacked out. Duane Warr plays all of the instruments on this album which kind of gives the whole thing a slightly off-kilter feel which enhances the madness. The sound is somewhat like a retarded drug-addled attempt at SABBATH with insane guitar solos and excursions into the most depressing, suicidal sounds ever laid to tape. I got this copy from Duane's brother who also (as a high-school-senior) did the DWARR logo (pictured here... sorry for the scanner cutting off the bottom). The two DWARR LP's are truly some of the strangest metal records of all time. They definitely don't sound like anything else, and the guy comes off as clearly disturbed on this release." - popsike.com, record auction reviews

""Animals" is indeed a foaming, rabid ANIMAL of screaming feedback guitars, totally doped out, reverberating vocals and sludgy Doooooohhm-riffing from the fiery depths of the netherworld. It owes plenty to the 60's/70's, like Hendrix, HIGH TIDE, SABBATH, FLOWER TRAVELING BAND, early PENTAGRAM etc (I believe 'Heavy Metal' was the term they used back in those days), but you don't get the impression that Mr. Warr was aiming solely for a "retro" sound when recording this. "Animals" sounds more like it happened out of sheer luck/accident when the man just tried to do the heaviest music he could ever imagine while the means to do so were primitive to say the least. The outrageous cannibalistic cover art must also have raised an eyebrow or 2 back in the days, considering that it came out years before the Death Metal/Gore Core-explosion started numbing our senses." thecorroseum.com, metal album reviews

This is probably one of the freakiest, most intensely cool things I've found and now you finally get to hear it in its entirety.

Playlist for 4-23-10, featuring Eddy Detroit's 1997 album "Jungle Captive"

Another week, another crazy album for you all to dig on. Eddy Detroit is a desert-shaman type character from Phoenix, AZ who is known for sometimes playing with the Sun City Girls. However, that doesn't really give much of an indication of his sound. Maybe this will:

"He's a bongo-furied, satan-inspired, mystical African hippie punk percussionist who's put out a few records that beg to be pulled out and studied from time to time." - album review for "Immortal Gods"

"Eddy Detroit is one of the greatest percussionists this side of the Nether Regions. He is half man and half goat, and I've got the pictures to prove it." - Sun City Girls

"The LP jacket cover is quite possibly the apex in outsider photography and demented vision. It features Eddy and a lady friend (a woman he picked up for the cover shot because she had the bone structure he was looking for) on horseback with Eddy holding his head in his outstretched hand. A perfect vision for the music contained within." - album review for "Immortal Gods"

Pretty spacey stuff, for sure. And, though both the reviews were for his first album, "Jungle Captive" is definitely no slouch, and in some respects is even more bizarre than "Immortal Gods" (which does have the Sun City Girls as his backing band).

Playlist for 4-16-10, featuring Sensational's 1997 album "Loaded with Power"

As promised, an all-hip hop edition of Obscuro! for y'all. Obviously, this isn't your standard 'underground' type rap music, because that's just not how I roll.

Here's a little info on Sensational from his label's website to give you some indication of how beyond-comprehension this stuff is:

Summer of '92, Brooklyn: Coming off the success of two classic hip-hop albums Straight Out The Jungle and Done By The Forces of Nature , the Jungle Brothers deliver their third LP Crazy Wisdom Masters to Warner Brothers. Boasting a new member, Torture, and a new experimental approach to the cliche-ridden artform ruled by gangsta rap, the JB's are shot down, their record hacked to pieces and released as the lackluster JBeez Wit Da Remedy.

Now the truth can be told. With its wall-of-noise, hyper-tempos and off-beat rhyming, Crazy Wisdom Masters was way ahead of its time, and definitely too ill for Warner. But reclaiming the exotic, erotic, raw style he left the blueprints for on Crazy Wisdom, comes Sensational (formerly Torture) with Loaded With Power (WSCD022).

Don't underestimate this twisted brother from the jungle, who's going for dolo this time around. You already peeped his style on such compilations as VALIS 1 & 2 (Subharmonic), Electric Ladyland 3 (Mille Plateaux), and WordSound's Crooklyn Dub Consortium, Vol. 2 and Subterranean Hitz, Vol. 1. Now its time to experience the frontal assault of MC/producer Sensational, who is cocked and fully loaded, and ready to unleash his ill styles upon the unaware. Beat freaks beware! You're about to be freaked in the earhole with the crispiest shit this side of Kentucky fried. Even you non-believers are gonna catch a contact high, so don't believe the hype--we dare you.

Fall of '97, Crooklyn: Revenge of the underdog. Sensational rises from the Other Side. Loaded With Power!uora, spouting fiery wisdom on Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. Rising from the post-industrial ruins of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, new outfits Roots Control and Scarab also participate in the festivities as they stake their claim as the future stars of Subterranea

Rap attack?

Well, because the album I'm playing tonight is a hip hop album, I decided to just fill up two hours of airtime with oddball, obscure, and underground rap music. I did this before (when I covered one of the hip hop guys' shows) but that left me free to play some more well-known stuff, too. This time around, I dug out the absolute weirdest, most out-of-the-ordinary stuff I could find. 'Like what,' you ask?

-A middle-aged accountant who raps about killing Santa Claus and all the 'hos' he has.
-Drug-damaged southern rap
-Novelty raps from the 1980's about Freddy Krueger
...and obviously a ton more, too. Also, there won't be too many similarities between this and the rap mixtape I prepared a while back, because that would be boring, right?

So make sure to tune in to WIDR tonight from midnight til 2 am for Bizarro Jerry's other-dimension hip hop party.

The O discography, part 4

Alright, so this will be the last part in the Completely O Discography posts. That's not to say Druggy G's post-O output (under the name gONNA gET gOT) aren't worth hearing, because they most definitely are. However, I'd feel a little bad about posting his current projects for free because he desperately needs your monetary contributions.

First, here are the other posts.

In the last edition, The O had just botched a potential deal with giant label Interscope due to bad management and internal conflicts with the overall sound of the band. They decided the best choice would be to part ways, Nepo continuing his forays into electro-pop (one song every year or something like that...dude needs to make a fuckin' ALBUM) and G continued rapping as the aforementioned gONNA gET gOT. Here is an odds-and-ends compilation of O tracks compiled after the fact by the dudes, and the last few O tracks which appeared on various label handouts in the later years. I'll post a compilation of Nepo's solo output thus far (I don't think he'll mind cuz it's a whopping 8 tracks, all of which have been available online for free for some time now) next week sometime, because I don't seem to have it on me now.The O - 'Junk in tha Trunk' LP
Description: 'Raw, unreleased O' as the subheading says. 19 tracks unavailable on any other release by the group, culled from their entire recording career. We've got tracks cut from the original 'Nightmerica' album ('I Wanna Fight Back,' 'Coke,' 'White Gangsta'), newer Nepo solo cuts ('Yer Warpin' Me,' 'The Humans') and tons of other shit.

Playlist for 4-9-10, featuring Debris' 1975 album "Static Disposal"

...another in a (hopefully) long line of full-album shows, this one featured a REALLY oddball LP. Recorded with studio time they won in a battle of the bands, Oklahoma's Debris sound like really nothing else I can think of, except maybe a LITTLE like Pere Ubu, but a lot wilder. This is their only album and has become something of a classic in the field of proto-punk, so enjoy it. Here's an abridged history of the band that comes from their myspace page:

“The town of Chickasha, OK, might seem an unlikely birthplace of a seminal experimental proto-art-punk band set on pushing the boundaries of rock. In the face of indifference, and even redneck hostility, and lasting only a year, Debris' forged a small legacy with its D.I.Y. ethic and improvised playing style. Charles Ivey and Oliver Powers played various instruments in various bands for several years before the summer of 1975, when they approached drummer Johnny Gregg for a new band. Debris' was quickly launched and by September, they had the first of the four live gigs of their short existence. Their chaotic performance style and dark, quirky sound — influenced by the Velvet Underground, the Stooges, Captain Beefheart, as well as English glam rock — did not endear them to their Oklahoma City-area audiences. At one such show, a Battle of the Bands competition where 50 bands vied for a new sound system, Debris' came in dead last while a cover band took home the prize. At the same time, they took advantage of a 1,590-dollar promotional package from a sound studio, which provided ten hours of recording time and a 1,000 LP pressing. With the lofty ambition to "cut the ultimate record of the decade," they recorded material in two sessions in mid-December and the record was pressed several months later (since released on CD as Static Disposal with much bonus material). The band started to mail it out to various record labels and rock magazines as a demo in hopes of getting a record deal and to more fully realize their project. With early negative reviews and no local support, Debris' disbanded, ahead of their time and in the wrong place. Within a year, more favorable press appeared and CBGB even offered them a gig and a chance to cash in on the burgeoning New York punk scene, but it was already too late.”

So yeah...there ya have it.
