Alright, so this album wasn't technically played in its entirety on the program. I actually played a compilation of tunes from this album and the first album by the group. The group in question is Virgin Insanity, a lo-fidelity 1970's project of one Mr. Bob Long out of Texas. He and his wife made the Virgin Insanity recordings with a cheap Radio Shack reel-to-reel and whatever instruments they had lying around. The hope was to get successful musicians to buy the songs from them, but it didn't work out. These recordings are mostly known for how far ahead-of-their-time they are. To say they 'influenced' groups like Guided by Voices, Modest Mouse, the Violent Femmes, Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, etc. would be untrue since it's unlikely any of those groups even heard Virgin Insanity's records. However, there are striking similarities. This is the second collection of recordings they did, even more lo-fi and oddball than the first, and is called "Toad Frog and Fish Friends."

Numbers 4 and 6 are beyond awesome, and remind me of the angst of early Violent Femmes recordings. Just great music, overall. Tune in tonight for another fabulous edition of the program, midnight to 2.

Man, what a strange place Ohio must be. Aside from the horrifying depiction of its backwoods in many a film, Ohio is also home of the weirdest musical collective around. Starting out in the late 70's/early 80's, Mike Rep and his backing band the Quotas have left a daunting pile of lo-fi cassettes, EP's, LP's and the like. That's not to mention the plethora of albums his cohorts have done by themselves. Jim Shepard (a member of Ego Summit along with Rep) released a few solo albums of disjointed folk music before offing himself. Another member of that group, Tommy Jay, released today's selection, "Tall Tales of Trauma" independently on cassette in 1986. The album is a collection of home recordings Tommy did dating back to 1974. The music ranges from strange to terrifying, and finds Jay on almost all the instruments (with some backups by Mike Rep himself.)

Playlist for 2-5-10, some creep keeps calling the station

This was a pretty decent show, although some fucking creep DID keep calling and asking really weird questions. I stopped answering after about the 5th call, but he continued to call throughout the whole show on not one, but both WIDR telephone lines. Check this out, though.
